This Time There's More...

It was 1986. The weekend was approaching and several of my nerdy film school friends were beside themselves with excitement. How come? James Cameron's 'Aliens' was opening...the sequel (back when sequels weren't just retreads of the original) to Ridley Scott's 'Alien'. The film schoolers were coordinating schedules and theatre times in order to get to the first screening. I didn't really understand this fervent salivation, and cornered one of my mates (SE).

Me: So 'Aliens'...how come so keen to see?

SE: Excuse me?

Me: 'Aliens'? I mean, you guys are racing down to the first show almost shaking with anticipation. I don't get it. Why?

Long pause. Then SE replies like it pains him to have to explain himself.

SE: First Dix, it's Jim Cameron.'The Terminator', hello? Second, and more importantly, it's aliens...plural...that means there's more than one.

Another pause as I digest this.

Me: Well, when you put it that way.

I joined them. It rocked. I thanked SE afterward for letting me tag along. He said to not let it happen again...doubt him, that is.

I didn't.

And yet that didn't work with Look Who's Talking Too.

or...probably the better example....remember the pre-hype about the "burly brawl" in the Matrix Reloaded?

Ho hum.

Matrix sequels...major disappoint.

It just seems we went from classic sequels like 'Godfather II' and 'Empire Strikes Back' and 'Aliens' and 'Terminator II' to garbage sequels like 'Be Cool'.

Probably started with 'Jaws II'

Alien and Aliens just weren't for me. I'm squeam, and there was too much guts. Not that they weren't good films, they were, I just can't watch 'em. Or scary movies, either. I'm one of those people who peeks between their fingers at the really scary bits. I'm a wuss. Figured I'd better admit it before you guys said it.

Somehow, I knew it would be Denis who said. Will would think it, but is too nice to say it to me.

Besides, I'm a chick. There's a certain inherent amount of wussiness allowed and expected.
