Showtime No Show?

Just an interesting aside. This afternoon, I've gotten a whack of visits looking for the Sleeper Cell post from what I presume to be the Showtime Network's buzz sheet for its shows...

http://www.sho.com/site/sleepercell/buzz.do

But when I click that incoming link, I get a page with this message...

Sorry. We at Showtime Online express our apologies; however, these pages are intended for access only from within the United States.
What's up with that? What don't they want me to see? Don't the internet tubes flow both directions? I must have answers...now!

I've heard that's the website they use to post secret plans to invade Canada.

Likely you can access an extended promo and/or episodes of the show from the site so they have to protect it by IP so as not to contravene distribution agreements with other broadcasters. Just a guess. Or what Diane said.

I think that's their prerogative--but not when they then comb for mentions of Showtime shows and use comments made about the show on their site as content. When they linked to me about Dexter, I changed the article lede to this:

"Hey, if you're American, and you're coming here from a link you saw on the SHOWTIME site, you should know that it's great that Showtime linked to this entry, but we in Canada, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter, can't access any of the pages on Showtime. Any of them. Including the one that's getting free content from me.

That might not seem like a big deal to you, but it is to me. In Canada, I watch DEXTER on TMN, The Movie Network. They're a pretty good channel, mainly because they have all the best original programming from SHOWTIME AND HBO. You don't have to choose. See, if you're in the USA, and you're paying for Showtime, you should know that we in Canada are getting a better product for a better price.

Now, if you're from Showtime, how about de-linking this, you fascist eejits?"

The referrals from Showtime's site dropped quite a bit soon afterwards. I suppose they got the message.

Showtime's blocked website used to infuriate me back when Huff was on the air. It was already difficult to find any info on that show, and then they lock Canadians out of their website? Blah.

Doh!

That wasn't that long ago was it, Denis? Ah, the disposibility of 'posts'....though what you wrote all comes flooding back now that you mention it. Showtime brats. Or it's what Diane said.

Since it's possible it's what Caroline said instead of my theory, it's stupid. Most other networks block the videos themselves, not the entire site. Don't they produce shows? You'd think they wouldn't be so scared of promoting them even to the outside world who might buy them.

I -- er, we Canadians -- had the same problem viewing the BSG "Resistance" web-only episodes that were available on the SciFi channel's website. It pisses me off that they feel the need to exclude us. I mean, really, is it such a big deal to make it available to eveyone, not just the U.S.? Sheesh!
